Chris' mother, Loan, invited me (Khanh) and my parents to her house for a pre-New Years party on December 29, 2012. At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go because I figured I'd be the only young adult there. After a few friendly reminders from Loan, I decided to attend the party and brought my laptop to entertain myself.
When I came to the party, I figured that my assumptions were right - that I'd be the only young adult here with no one around my age to converse with. Then, I saw a male figure walking around upstairs and came down to greet the guests. That was when Loan introduced him as their 27 year-old son, named Chris. Everyone was surprised to learn that Loan and Quan (Chris' father) had a son, since they rarely mentioned him. I was highly impressed by the way he semi-formally dressed for the occasion, while I felt underdressed, wearing jeans and a somewhat nice shirt.
We both didn't speak to each other right away. I was shy, still sticking by my parents, and Chris was busy helping his parents with the party. Before dinner started, I wanted to use the Internet on my laptop and wondered if the house had Wi-Fi for me to use. Originally, I wanted to ask Chris' father, but he seemed busy at that moment. Then, I conjured up the courage to ask Chris, speaking to him for the first time.
"Um excuse me... But do you have Wi-Fi at your house...?"
Chris politely replied that his house didn't have strong Wi-Fi, but somehow that didn't disappoint me that much. Then we naturally started to talk to one another, beginning with my studies and his job. Our conversation flowed very easily, as we continued to talk during dinner and throughout the night. I opened myself up to Chris as I shared some of my deep, personal struggles, while he listened tentatively and offered some advice. We even bonded over common interests, such as anime and comedy movies. I was quite attracted to Chris' humor, making me smile and laugh to my stomach. I honestly hadn't felt that happy in such a long time.
Minutes turned into hours, as we enjoyed each other's company, until it was time to go home. It was the first time that I didn't want the night to end. We exchanged numbers to plan on hanging out again soon. Five minutes after I left the house, Chris called me to ask if I had found my gloves. I was surprised that he called me this soon and my parents' friends thought it was an excuse for him to talk to me because he liked me. I laughed at that thought, but within my heart, I knew that I wanted to be with him.
And the rest is history :)
